Meet the Artist:Josh Mayfield

Q: What inspires you to create?

My inspirations varies honestly. Sometimes I am motivated by a gallery opening, rushing to get work done to be involved . Other times it is out of a necessity to have artwork in the house. I have never been more creative than since my second son was born. I hadn’t done any artwork for the better part of 10 years or so. My wife got pregnant and I wanted to do some artwork for the babie’s room, From that point on I really haven’t stopped.

Q: Name an artist you are wow’d by?

A: I have always loved Escher and Dali. They have been my favorite artists since I can remember liking art.

Q: When you create, do you typically listen to music, and if so what?

A: I love music while I’m creating. I mostly listen to hardcore/heavy metal music. I love Madball,
Agnostic Front, Blood for Blood, but while my wife was pregnant I listened to the Chris Cornell solo album Scream a lot. Very different from my usual playlist, but enjoy it very much.

Q: Any recommended reading?

A: Honestly don’t find too much time for reading anymore, but thoroughly enjoyed “Angels and Demons”, used to read a lot of John Saul books also. Right now my son is reading “The Woman in Black”, after we told him about the movie, and my wife is reading “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” which they are both loving.

Q: Are you an action, comedy or romance kinda guy, and what film would you then recommend? Of course you could also maybe be into documentaries?

A: When it comes to movies I usually go for the psychological thrillers, or comedies.

Q: We know being an artist is a lot of work, so what drives you to keep going?

A: I cannot actually pinpoint what drives me, but all I know is I think about art all the time, and now that I have gotten myself back into being productive, I have to say guilt. I feel guilty when I am not productive, because I do enjoy it so much.

Q: Most entertaining/interesting/boring story from a previous show?

A: I don’t really have any good stories from previous shows, but I do have to say that I have been involved in two galleries in the area, and the difference between the crowd in each is unbelievable. One place I really felt like I didn’t belong, the other feels like home. And will be for as long as they want.

Q: Best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?

A: Best advice I have ever received is to just keep working.

Q: Worst?

A: I don’t feel any advice is really bad, just something to learn from.

Q: How do you think the Internet has changed art?

A: The Internet has made being a successful, profitable artist much more attainable. I know for a
fact that in the last week alone , my artwork has been seen by people from at least 5 countries. Which before this I was lucky for my work to be seen by five people not in my family.
